This subject can be complicated, but it is really very simple. There is a very large selection with a large variety. There are bathtubs that are normally 32"x60" size. In this area you have skirted(solid front), drop in(fits into a cut out platform), and free standing( a.k.a. claw foot tubs). The bathtub is normally made of two different materials,cast iron(heavy ,but very durable), acrylic (lightweight and more variety). American Standard makes another type known as Americast (half the weight of cast iron yet more durable then acrylic).

 Whirlpools are a popular item to have in a home. They are great after a hard day at work. Like regular tubs there are a wide variety of sizes and shapes, Most whirlpools have 4 to 6 jets which spray a combo of air and water. There are many options with whirlpools such as an in-line heater which keeps the water warm as it is used, lighting, and seats/shelves.

 Air tubs are very similar to whirlpools except its all air and not an air/ water mix. Air tubs tend have less of a massage and more of a therapeutic feeling. With air tubs you can get very similar options to whirlpools to include aroma therapy( the air mixes with a scent). Air tub in line heaters DO NOT heat the water but heat the air instead.

 Soaking tubs are more or less the same as bathtubs but are deeper and sometimes longer. Claw foot cast iron tubs are normally about 20" to 24" deep. These tubs are normally in a master bathroom due to possible space issues and not in a main or hall bath.

Pre fabricated shower bases come in a wide variety of sizes. These are not meant to be tiled and normally have a  textured bottom.

 Most shower bases are made from acrylic, some are constructed from cast iron.
